My approach

A warm, compassionate, and collaborative mindset is central to the way I work with clients.  I believe every person is unique, and the expert on their own life and experiences.

How can psychotherapy help me?

As an Integrative Relational Psychotherapist I offer a safe, confidential space to allow you to recognise and process feelings and emotions that may originate from your past, but are 'showing up' in your present. The origins of these difficulties may not be obvious to ourselves, or those around us, and can manifest as symptoms including anxiety, depression, or compulsive and self-harming behaviours.

I'm trained to draw on different evidence-based psychotherapeutic techniques to help you work through these experiences, and find out what they mean for your life choices in the past, and today.  Experience shows this can result in increased self-awareness, self-esteem, and a new found ability to make decisions that make more sense, and have more meaning for us.

My solution-focussed approach is to work flexibly with clients to explore the changes they wish to make, and how therapy may help them move forwards towards greater fulfilment and wellbeing.

I integrate humanistic, psychodynamic and CBT ways of working into my practice.

humanistic

Influenced by the work of Carl Rogers and Irvin Yalom, my humanistic and existential foundation offers clients a confidential and contained  space, to explore confusing and complex emotions.
Shame and fear thrive in secrecy.
Free from judgement, life's most difficult and painful challenges can be faced with curiosity and courage.  This enables greater self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self-compassion to unfold.

psychodynamic

Inspired by Freud and Jung, working psychodynamically means exploring the concept that our difficult experiences in the present are driven by unconscious reactions rooted in our past.  The process of making them conscious releases their power, enabling us to choose to respond in different, more productive ways. This leads to a healthier relationship with ourselves, and with others.

cbt

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (or CBT) is based on the understanding that our thoughts, feelings, physical sensations and actions are interconnected, and that negative thinking and emotional responses can trap us in vicious and distressing  cycles of behaviour. CBT helps break the cycle by identifying negative schemas, and finding new, more balanced, ways to live.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

Rachel, 31

"My sessions with Lucy have quite simply been life changing. Her warm nature and energy had me feeling at ease from the get go.  Lucy has helped me to heal, build and improve on myself and other relationships, which has had such a positive impact on my life and those around me. She has given me the confidence and skills that I need to carry me forward, far beyond our sessions which is invaluable."

Steven, 36

"I came to Lucy at a time when I was really struggling and in a pretty dark place.  She helped me find a way to talk about my emotions that made it  feel like a weight was lifted very early on.  Lucy helped me understand things that happened in my childhood in a way that helped me to forgive myself, not blame other people.  I now have

confidence for my

future. "

Clare, 27

"During counselling I felt Lucy really listened to me and understood what I was saying. She helped me to make links between my thoughts, feelings and experiences and see how they fit into what we explored in previous sessions. Our discussions helped me to understand myself and my anxiety better and I feel more able to untangle my thoughts myself and use strategies to not get caught up in my worries."

My professional framework

As a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) I am committed to working within the BACP Ethical Framework.

My therapeutic role is to support, not judge.  I am, however, trained to recognise the symptoms of mental health difficulties and their associated conditions, and experienced in working with  formal diagnoses and prescribed medication alongside medical mental health practitioners, as required.
